As a long time Sinn afficianado, I was pleased to receive the highly anticipated Sinn U2. Not that I dive 2,000 meters, I do like to wear a water resistant watch that I do not have to worry about and can wear into the steam/sauna/shower when I go to the spa at the Bellagio!! (I know your not suppposed to wear your watch through all of that , but I do anyway, thus, my mental justification for the the luxury of the U2).
One of my biggest concerns was its, size. At 44m, it is larger than I prefer, but was told by the AD and by other owners that it "wears small", and I tend to agree. This may because of the crown placement at 4 o'clock. It feels smaller than my UN Maxi Marine, but I think is a tad larger.
This is my first review, so be patient and be gentle.
This is from the owners manual, which is in German, but a disc is supplied with an English translation
Model U2
Movement:
• ETA 2893-2
• mechanical lever movement with self-winding mechanism
• 21 jewels and 28.800 vibrations per hour
• antimagnetic according to DIN 8309
• shock resistance according to DIN 8308
• hand setting with second hand stop
• quick adjustment of date and second time zone
Display/Functions:
• inactive luminous hands and indices
• hours, minutes, seconds
• date in dial aperture
• second time zone off the center
Case:
• submarine steel, sand-blasted
• screwed-on case back made of submarine steel
• screw-down crown
• sapphire crystal, antireflective coating on both sides
• hardened diver’s bezel with luminous triangle, undetachable
• two dehumidifying capsules, one of which is situated at 6 o’clock, indication of degree of saturation:
white (dry) until blue (fully saturated)
• water resistant according to DIN 8310
• pressure resistance up to 200 bar = ca. 2000 m water depth
• negative pressure resistance
Width of watchband: 22 mm
Starting Procedure and Corrections
For the corrections release the screwed crown by winding counterclockwise
The crown has 3 positions:
Position 1: winding
The winding mechanism is secured against overwinding by a safety clutch. Normally, a few crown windings are
sufficient to guarantee the function of the watch.
Position 2:
counterclockwise: adjustment of the date
clockwise: adjustment of hand for second time zone
Position 3: hand setting and second hand stop
For a precise setting we recommend to pass beyond the desired minute position and set the hand backwards.
The second hand stop enables you set the time precisely. The movement starts again when position 3 is left.
Second Time Zone and Determination of the Direction
For the second time zone use the crown – Position 2 clockwise – in order to adjust the 24-hour-hand, which snaps in
an hourly distance, according to the required time zone.
If the hand is operated as 24-hour-hand, that means with the local time, it may be used to indicate the north
direction.
For this purpose, turn your horizontally lying watch in such a way that the hour hand points to the sun. The 24-hourhand
then always points north.
During daylight saving time the clock must be set back one hour in order to receive a correct result.
Diver’s Rotating Bezel
The diver’s rotating bezel has a minute division and snaps every minute.
For your safety the bezel is unidirectional. Therefore , diving times can only become shorter.
Diving times are measured by positioning the illuminated triangle on the bezel opposite the minute hand. Now the
diving time can be read directly off the diving bezel.
Dehumidifying Capsule
The two integrated dehumidifying capsules (one visible at 6 o’clock) guarantee an absolute security against
steaming up.
The discoloration in the inspection window of the dehumidifying capsule indicates the amount of already absorbed
air humidity.
White-blue (delivery status) means that the capsule is dry.
Deep-blue means that the dehumidifying capsule is saturated and that the watch needs to be send to the repair
service in order to be maintained by a Sinn watchmaker.
Certification of high-pressure test by the Germanischer Lloyd
The watch stands a high mechanical strain and is shockproof according to DIN 8308.
Packaging: Who cares, it comes in a box that I threw on the pile with the rest of them.
Dial / Hands, very handsome and nice to look at. easy to read, and nice colors.
Strap / Buckle / Bracelet, rubber with a satin finished huge buckle. I would like to see a smaller band offered...this one is a monster and the buckle is huge, 50mm x 25mm
Accuracy seems fine to me
Comfort, 7/10, this is a large piece, no matter how you cut it. WOuld be tough to wear with a coat and tie.
Overall Impression : A very unique and striking piece. Obviously tough as nails, "submarine steel" and very very hard, virtually scratchproof I think. I am not going to baby this one, and am confident that it will hold up. The worst I can say about it concerns the strap and its buld. Overall, it is quite comfortable to wear.
